During the middle school years, students will move from learning rules and accumulating facts to analyzing and asking why. As they study grammar, composition, and literature, the focus will be learning how to support a thesis. In history we will discover how events are connected and begin recognizing patterns. Math and science develop from memorization of facts to applying formulas and using the scientific method.

Haley McAfee

Haley, who earned a B.A. from the University of Central Florida in 2005, loved growing up as a homeschooled student. As someone who thrives on independent learning and meeting challenges, homeschooling was the perfect fit. After graduating from UCF, Haley spent 2005 teaching grades 3-6 with Ceil Humphreys at Humphreys Junior High. She established Keystone Academy the following year, in 2006, and has been enthusiastically teaching ever since. Haley is currently embracing her own homeschool journey with her three sons, Will, Griffin, and Nate.

Gwen Gurr

Gwen began homeschooling Haley, the first of her three children, in 1988. She continued the homeschooling journey from kindergarten to high school, finishing twenty years later with her youngest daughter, Lauren, in 2008. Throughout her twenty-plus years in the homeschooling world, Gwen has gathered a wide range of experience and knowledge in homeschooling. In 1996 she helped create and served as an active board member of Family Educators of Orange County, a support group for homeschoolers. In 1999 she was invited to work with the Orange County Public School System as a member of the Home Education Task Force, a committee which created a revised Home Education Program packet. She has also completed leadership training with the Florida Parent-Educators Association. Gwen enjoys teaching the lower grades at Keystone Academy with her two daughters, Haley and Lauren.
